A Letter to Myself
“A Letter to Myself” is a physical depiction of how I feel about my identity. As a Canadian-born Taiwanese person, some things about the core of my culture feel natural or close to me but the majority of it feels distant and nostalgically unfamiliar, just like the subject in the photo. As referenced in the accompanying film, her identity is much like mine. I have always had trouble discovering my path in life, both culturally and artistically. I’m drawn to evoking emotions and telling stories with my work, partly because I am terrible at or unable to tell my own. The rigid grid structure of the cuts signify both the social structure we are all apart of, as well as how divided I feel from reaching a strong sense of self-worth. This piece reflects my internal qualms and conflicts as I navigate through my emotions and place within the world. “A Letter to Myself” is also a reflection piece on my time in school as I never felt like I made anything purely for myself as an artist and designer. So, Ryan, this one’s for you.
